RGB is a reasonable compromise that allows us to display a wide variety of colors using three types of light-emitting phosphors, organic LEDs, backlit colored filters, or other similar technologies.
But displays always use some form of RGB as their fundamental color space, because there isn’t any practical way to make a display that can show every XYZ color. XYZ can represent any possible real visible color that a human being can sense. There are also “absolute” color spaces where the colors are specified without reference to any other color. The RGB spaces are all “relative” spaces in that any color in an RGB space is specified relative to the three primary colors of that space. There are an infinite number of RGB color spaces, created by varying several parameters, including the specific hue of red, green, and / or blue to be used for the colored dots in the display and the specific way the brightness of the dots in the display varies as the numbers fed into the display vary.
